What is Hanadama?

Hanadama pearls are renowned for their exceptional beauty and luminosity, making them some of the most exquisite pearls in the world.

Pearl farmers in Japan call one of the highest quality pearl which has just been fished for "Hanadama", which means "Flower". So far, there is no clear or consistent definition for the term. However, there're a lot of renowned pearl appraisal laboratories in Japan have given it a modern significance and defined it with objectivity based on scientific measurements.

Three grading criteria for top Hanadama pearls from Pearl Science Laboratory (PSL) and New Japan Pearl Laboratory (NJPL) are presented below for your reference.

Pearl Science Laboratory (PSL)

Aurora Hanadama (オーロラ花珠) Certificate

  • Size: >=6.0mm
  • Nacre: >=0.4mm
  • Shape: perfectly round
  • Luster: very strong
  • Blemish: very slightly
  • Body Color: white
  • Overtone: aurora effect

Aurora Tennyo (オーロラ天女) Certificate

It is a name given to those that meet PSL's quality standards of "Aurora Hanadama" and those withparticularly strong luster.

Pearl Institute Co., Ltd (PI)

Hanadama Pearl (花珠真珠) Certificate

  • Nacre: thickly coated
  • Shape: round to near round
  • Luster: strong luster
  • Blemish: flawless to tiny flaw
  • Finishing technology: excellent

Five Star Hanadama Pearl (FIVE STAR 花珠真珠) Certificate

"FIVE STAR" is a title assigned to the best Hanadama Pearls that possess the strongest luster and the highest quality according to PI's appraisal standards.
